I came across chopping bowls like this in the collection of the Museu Nacional de Etnologia in Lisbon and was impressed by their functional and aesthetic qualities. Turned from a single piece of wood, they combine a chopping block and a bowl to catch the choppings. This kind of bowl originates from a few villages in the Trás-os-Montes region in the north east of Portugal. Jasper Morrison
